Why do you need to repair your windscreen as soon as possible?

Stars, chips, bullseye and long cracks can be repaired. However, it is very necessary that a repair is carried out as soon as possible, especially when it's a long crack. Long cracks let in moisture and dirt that can ultimately damage the laminate and destroy the ability of the windscreen to withstand damage in the event of the crash. Experience has shown that a long crack is when repaired, the repair will store the full strength and integrity of the windscreen. The time factors are equally similar for small cracks like stars and chips to be repaired.

Repairing process

In the case of bullseye and stars, the repairing is done normally by the use of the injectors, which allow the air to be extracted from the damaged area by suction. After that, the resin is injected into the damaged areas in order to replace the air. The resin bonds to the glass and because it has a same refractive index as glass, the repaired crack are not visible, generally showing 80-90% improvement.

Long cracks in the windscreen are treated in a different way: once a crack has grown to 1 or 2 inches larger, it is opened to the surface of the glass along its entire length. This is why long cracks are more prone to the ingress of water and dirt which will ultimately damage the laminate. A sliding injector is used to fill the resin into the crack and is slid along the crack until all resin has been injected. First, a thin resin primer is injected which binds to the glass and this is followed by heavier resins which provide the required strength to the windscreen. Once repaired correctly a crack is guaranteed against any further damage for life.
